1. What Other Accommodation in London?

House & Apartment Rentals.

The same parameters as Hotels apply when choosing this type of accommodation. Advantages are that it can suit the single traveler, to large groups/families, and can prove to be a very competitive option to hotels. Again the advantages/disadvantages of Zones 1-6 should be considered.

We do not offer opinions about properties ,areas of Greater London, or the search engine sites that cover this type of accommodation.

What we would strongly suggest when considering a property rental is to read the reviews very carefully, and if possible look for the same property on a different site, and compare reviews.

TIP–If travelling by Car/Van/Mini Bus, it is essential the visitor check with the landlord what the parking arrangements are for the property. Does it have FREE parking, is it resident only, therefore does the property have visitor permits, and is there a charge for this.

Tip–For UK residents travelling by Car/Van/ Mini Bus, check on www.tfl/ulez, by entering your registration No., to see if your vehicle is ULEZ compliant. If not the daily charge is £12.50 ($16 €14.5). NON-UK vehicles registered outside the UK need to meet the emissions standards when driving in London, or pay the daily charge. Register your vehicle on www.tfl/ulez. Do Not forget–There is also a Central London daily congestion charge, £15 ($19 €17.5). See full details in “Getting Around”.

Hostels

Again, all the previous selection rules apply, though for the student backpackers, there probably isn’t much on this site that will be a revelation. Those that do the world traveling, all talk to each other about what is good and bad in places being visited, so generally ahead of the game.

As far as accommodation is concerned, Hostel usually means dormitory style rooms, when you share with anybody. Hostels that do not offer dormitories is probably not a hostel. The age range is 18 to 35, although there may be exceptions, and some may offer family rooms. The general theme though is to enjoy yourself, make new friends, and party.

Camping and Caravanning

It may seem a good idea, but for tourist London, it is not that practical. The vast majority of organised well run sites, will be on the outer fringes of London, and generally further out into the countryside.

Advantages-accommodation costs are low

Disadvantages-Increased daily travel costs, travel time and railway station parking fees

TIP–When searching for a suitable site, try to find a site that is close to a railway station, with a fast service into Zone1 London, that is within a 15 minute walk of the site. Do Not rely on bus services. It is essential to book your dates early, particularly during the school summer holidays .

Example– Site at West Horsley, Surrey, run by Camping & Caravanning Club, is a 15minute walk to Horsley railway station, with a service into London Waterloo, taking 48mins.
